The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. –Mark Twain
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, now that classes have settled and our year on its way.
My name is Brad Reiben and I have been teaching for almost 20 years. I went to school in Kelowna, graduating from KLO in '95 and from UBC-O in 2006. As a kid in the valley, I grew up a competitive hockey player with a group of kids dreaming of days in the NHL, now it has boiled down to stories of early morning practices, sharing fries, 4-3 wins in overtime, and thanking our parents for all the sacrifices.
Over my teaching career, I have had a diverse range of experiences from connecting with at-risk students (4 years of running an alternate program), literacy support (K-6), publishing young writers (gr.4-6), skateboard, art and guitar clubs. In the classroom, I have found it possible to connect will all students, exactly where they are along their journey. Three of my greatest gifts to the classroom are personalizing students educational experience, teaching kids the process of self-awareness and self control, and inspiring them to realize their talents. I like the approach of Rafe Esquith who says "teach like your hair's on fire!" That basically sums it up for me, now is the time, today is the day.
I am a musician, poet, athlete, artist and family man. I have two wonderful girls (ages 10 and 12), a wife who keeps me in check, and I am an extremely excited to have this permanent teaching position a OTS. I work and live in Lake Country and see many kids and parents at Pebble beach, Lake Country School of Dance, the Winfield arena, Big White and IGA. I feel being a teacher is my way of adding my voice and contributing something positive to our wonderful area of the world.
I am looking forward to how this year will unfold and sure it will be filled with magic.
