We have started writing fictional stories. Super fun and creative. It's all about ideas and details. In addition to what we do in our writing books, students have started Story # 1 in Google Classroom. Students can work on this at home if they'd like (however it can fold into your routine). I will also post due dates for each assignment. As things are right now, we are just practicing and will need time to get rolling.
With this said, I'd like for students to be finished this first writing assignment by Friday, Oct. 14.

Words...oh, beautiful words
My writing program begins with topics to write about: personal memories, things we know a lot about, things we like and loathe, and writing from our imagination.
Adrienne Gears calls them Brain Pockets. Your child will know all about them.
I will teach your child that from detailed drawings comes detailed writing. Writers need to spend time figuring out what to say and how to say it. Each student has a writing and we draw tons of detail and then add tons of colour. I mean tons! From this, your child can explain the picture to me or a partner (in essence writing but without words) then we write from what we see in our picture. Slow and steady.
I also use Excellence in Writing which includes my favourite topic...BANNED WORDS. This program is an incredible guide to help students with mechanics of writing to the creative side of voice and style.
As a writer myself, I understand the exhilaration putting pen to paper and the frustration of struggling with words and getting ridiculously tongue-tied. But when it works, it's a beautiful thing.
